Stefan Scheib

Stefan Scheib studied Physics at the Technical University of Karlsruhe, Germany, now called Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, focusing on experimental nuclear physics. He received his Dr. sc.nat. from the Federal Institute of Technolgy, Zurich (ETHZ) on his work on proton therapy conducted at the Paul Scherrer Institute, in Villigen, Switzerland. For the next 13 years, he worked for the Hirslanden group as a medical physicist focusing on radiosurgery and brachytherapy, received his MAS in Medical Physics from ETHZ and his board certification from the Swiss Society Radiobiology and Medical Physics (SSRMP). For 14 years, he is now with Varian Medical Systems, Imaging Laboratory in Dättwil AG, Switzerland, a Siemens Healthineers Company, responsible for applied research in radiation therapy focusing on image guidance and motion management.

Talk

This presentation will introduce Varian's research, innovation, and development process, the leading manufacturer of radiation therapy devices and radiation therapy solutions. After introducing the basic principles of radiation therapy, the product portfolio of Varian, now a Siemens Healthineers Company, is briefly discussed. The presentation will focus on external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) devices and imaging applications used in modern EBRT. Varian's innovation and research processes are described based on the successful history of radiation therapy, today's technical innovations, and the global cancer problem we face.
For a high-tech company, innovation and research must be materialized, released to the market, and appreciated by customers to become successful products distributed worldwide. The presentation reviews innovation, applied research, collaborations with academic researchers, and the transition into the product development process of radiation therapy delivery systems and software solutions for the global market.
Examples of product innovation, applied research topics, and research collaborations are given. A personal view of research within Varian compared to academic research and examples of career paths in Varian will be shared.
