UZH Space Hub

4th Swiss Parabolic Flight Campaign

Early this morning a zero-G aircraft left Dübendorf Airport bringing 8 scientific experiments in different gravity conditions. This is the 4th Swiss Parabolic Flight Campaign and was organised by the UZH Space Hub together with the Swiss Skylab Foundation.

Despite the difficulties arisen in the last months due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the University of Zurich is re-starting its research activities and the UZH Space Hub together with the Swiss Skylab Foundation have been able to reorganize the planned parabolic flight campaign to assure all necessary protection concepts. The zero-G research flight took off today, June 11, from the Dübendorf airfield - in compliance with all corona protection measures.

The Airbus A310 ZERO-G hosts eight experiments from different fields (medicine, astrophysics and geology), prepared by UZH, the Universities of Bern and Basel, ETH Zurich and the Italian Eurac Research Institute. One experiment, moreover, is a research collaboration between the University of Zurich and NASA, in which the University of Wisconsin is also involved.

Researchers

Thanks to parabolic flights, scientists from Switzerland have been able to raise research funds at European level or prepare research projects on the International Space Station. "In this way, the Swiss Parabolic Flights achieve high added value and strengthen the competitiveness of research and technology from Switzerland," says Oliver Ullrich (Director of the UZH Space Hub). With the Swiss Parabolic Flights programme, science and innovation in Switzerland will gain easy access to the research environment of "weightlessness". This is also made possible by the Swiss Air Force using the Dübendorf airfield for the take-offs and landings of the Airbus 310 ZERO-G. The weightlessness research flights are carried out by Novespace, a subsidiary of the French space agency CNES, which owns and operates the A310 ZERO-G.
