Approaching an airport and landing are usually the most labour-intensive phases of a flight. However, flying with foresight can reduce noise and CO2 emissions. The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, DLR) has developed an assistance system called Low Noise Augmentation System, LNAS, which calculates the optimum altitude, sink rate, speed and configuration of the aircraft, and dynamically corrects the recommendations during the approach. This system has been tested with more than 90 approaches to Zurich Airport by DLR and Empa researchers, led by the Swiss SkyLab Foundation. These tests have shown that noise emission and fuel consumption are significantly reduced if LNAS is used. Picture left: Christian Merz, picture right: German Aerospace Center.
