The Aesthetics of Wonders Exhibition

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the European Space Agency (ESA), Switzerland Innovation Park Zurich (IPZ), Universität Zürich (UZH) and Space Exchange Switzerland (SXS) presented The Aesthetics of Wonders — a Swiss exhibition that celebrates the extraordinary visual language of science in front of the EPFL Swiss Convention Center.

The exhibition was originally curated by the UZH Space Hub ecosystem and the Switzerland Innovation Park Zurich, in view of the opening of the UZH Space Hub Hangar 4 last September. It celebrates  the collaboration between experts of different disciplines, united by a passion for space exploration and research.

By pairing Earth observation and astronomical imagery, new perspectives emerge: Earth appears as one planet among many, with structures that echo across the cosmos. The curators intentionally worked at the edge of abstraction - resulting in a scientific and aesthetic "cabinet of wonders", with images that incentivize to dive into the research behind them.

This special exhibition is a product of the interdisciplinary environment of the UZH Space Hub ecosystem with contributions from art (Jelena Rakin), earth sciences (Claudia Röösli, Jochem Braakhekke), astrophysics (Robert Feldmann), and planetary science (Ravit Helled, Joachim Stadel).

Thanks to the support of the IPZ, UZH Faculty of Science and SXS, the visitors of the Swiss Space Community Days were able to bring home this special work with the catalogue drafted alongside the exhibition. With this work, we hope to further foster exchange and innovation and enhance the understanding of the different disciplines and fascination for space.
